Your Bio

Hello and welcome to my world of Photography powered by SmugMug.

I have used Nikon equipment since I rewarded myself with an F2 and 50mm lens to celebrate my university graduation and my first "real" job. It still functions after 35 years.

Currently, my camera bag includes Nikon D300 and D700 bodies accompanied by my favorite Nikkor lenses: 14-24mm f2.8 AF-s, 24-70mm f2.8 AF-s, 70-200mm f2.8 AF-s VR and 85mm f1.4.

You will find me and my gear in the Pacific Northwest exploring the mountains, seashores, streams and forests that I have called home my entire life.

Or, a more recent passion is shooting at music venues. This is a challenging genre because of the lighting and trying to capture a performer's essence. I am the house photographer at the Mt. Baker Blues Festival and am a contract concert photographer for the Seattle Weekly. Best seat in the house. My images also appear on Ten Years After's websites: http://www.ten-years-after.com/tour2008/seattle08/judytilley.htm and http://www.tenyearsafternow.com/tya/seattle.htm

A very enjoyable, very part-time job I have is photographing Ben Mann's paintings for his website: http://www.mann-alive.com/. Brilliant and whimsical, they will brighten your home and outlook.

I add new images almost weekly so the welcome mat is always out for you to visit. Or, if you want a photo of a special place in the Pacific Northwest, please let me know and I will get the the shot.

Smugmug offers those of us with Pro accounts the choice to use a Professional Lab. Bay Photo costs more but they hand correct each image which I believe is essential to a great print.

Mt. Baker Blues festival 2006 : These images were shot with my Nikon D200 when I was new to digital photography. Unfortunately, I shot in jpg mode versus RAW so photos are not as sharp and have loss of detail. But, it was a fun shoot and was the catalyst for further concert photography adventures.

Rockfest 2007 : In 2007, on a whim, I went to Cadott, WI to my first Chippewa Valley Rock Festival for four days of ROCK. As a VIP ticket holder, I was able to shoot during each performer's set from the photo line as I made my way to the front of the stage. National and regional acts rocked Wisconsin's farmland such as Deep Purple, Three Doors Down, Hinder, Godsmack, Fuel, Third Eye Blind, Grand Funk Railroad and KISS among others.

Heroes of Woodstock @ Winthrop : Although I didn't get an official media pass, I was able to shoot from the crowd. It was just as well because those few who did were restricted to the very back of the stage. They joined me in front. This concert featured Country Joe McDonald ("Gimmee an F") as MC, Canned Heat, Jefferson Starship, Ten Years After, and Big Brother (who were Janis Joplin's back up band). Shooting into the sun resulted in washed out backgrounds so don't fault me too much. I do it better in the dark. Entire concert shot hand held with Nikon D700 paired with 70-200mm f2.8 VR. You shoulda been there.

Island County : Island County consists of Whidbey and Camano Islands, and seven smaller islands (Baby, Ben Ure, Deception, Kalamut, Minor, Smith, and Strawberry) and parts of Fidalgo Island. You can see vestiges of its farming heritage but small family farms are being replaced by housing developments. It is blessed with numerous lakes, many miles of saltwater shoreline and small mountains but no rivers.

Nevada High Desert : Valley of Fire is a Nevada state park within several hours drive of Las Vegas if you take the scenic route, much closer if you take sterile Interstate 15. Pastels and earth tones dominate this starkly beautiful park. The bonus was that it was very quiet and relatively uncrowded. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area lies adjacent to the sprawl of Las Vegas. You can drive a 14 mile loop to see geologic formations caved by wind and water.

Mexico : During December 2004 and January 2005, my daughter and I traveled around Mexico for six weeks. Four of those weeks were spent on the Green Tortoise bus on their Southern Migration tour. We began in San Francisco and after crossing the border at Nogales, we ambled around Mexico along the Pacific Coast and venturing into the interior Spanish Colonial cities and towns. Images were taken with a Canon G5, my first foray into digital photography.

Traditional and Computer Art : My second grade teacher at Columbia Elementary School discovered that I had "the Gift" to draw. Ever since then I have drawn, mostly pencil but anything with a point. I tried painting but except for sign painting and murals, I wasn't drawn to the brush.
